For sanatana dharmiks....
This is the festival of lights; the day which is symbolic of triumph of good over evil. North indians celebrate it saying that this is the day when raama defeated ravana; south indians celebrate it saying that this the day when krishna defeated kamsa. I hear some say this traces back to defeat of vrtra by indra in vedas. All we know; that the day is auspicious and every house should be lit with diyas and consecutively light the diya within.

For Arya Samajists...
This is, besides beings the festival of lights, the day to commemorate the life of Maharishi Swami Dayanand Saraswati, as he passed away on Diwali, 1883. You can see our online commemoration here:

Rishi Nirvaan!

To be honest; I think it has a dharmik mystery:
Jainas celebrate it as an auspicious day
Sikhs celebrate it for their guru was released from jail
Arya Samajists celebrate it for swami dayananda left his body
Pauraaniks celebrate it as day of victory of raama or krishna
Smarthas celebrate it as a symbolic day of light's triumph over darkness

It feels more as if That is trying to make all of them celebrate the festival..

is not all true, because Swami died on the date of Divali. so it not only of that we celibrate for the Swami.

thats why i wanted to know why we Vaidikh Dharmies celibrate it.
